Jorge Vargas was born on February 8, 1967 in Pichilemu. He completed his primary education in Colegio Preciosa Sangre and Colegio E-367 in Pichilemu; and he completed his secondary school in Instituto Regional Federico Errázuriz in Santa Cruz, and Liceo C-25 in Pichilemu.[2]

He studied Pedagogy in Physical Education in Catholic University of Chile, in Maule between 1987 and 1991;[2] and between 1993 and 1994, he obtained the technical degree on administrative management in Universidad Metropolitana de las Ciencias de la Educación.[2] He's also degree in education with a specialization in educational administration and MA in management and planning, in the Diego Portales University.[2]

He worked as teacher of Physical Education in Pichilemu schools, between 1994 and 1999.[2]

Political career

Vargas joined the Christian Democrat Party of Chile in 1987, and in 1988 he was elected provincial coordinator of Juventud DC Cardenal Caro and President of Democracia Cristiana Universitaria.[2] Vargas was elected secretary general of the Students Federation of Catholic University of Chile at Talca in 1989, and in 1990 he was elected President. He was also elected Advisor Counselor of the Social Formation Centre of the Diocese of Talca, and Provincial Counselor of Juventud Democracia Cristiana in Talca that year.[2]

Vargas was elected councillor of Pichilemu in 1992, with 732 votes (12.38%) from a total of 5915 voters.[3] He was elected Mayor of Pichilemu in 1996,[4] and in 1997 was elected President of the Mayors and Councillors of the Cardenal Caro Province.[2]

Vargas was re-elected as Mayor of Pichilemu in 2000,[5] and re-elected again in October 2004 with a 43.37 total per centage of the total votes.[1]

Vargas was taken out of his office because of false medical licenses,[6] on November 7, 1998. In 2007, he was arrested in the charge of bribery in the municipality of Pichilemu, using money to produce calendars with his photos,[7] in the lawsuit known as Caso Calendarios. Vargas could not come back to his office, and was succeeded by Victor Rojas, who was also displaced.[8]

Heredero de tu Amor

Vargas recorded a self-written song called Heredero de tu Amor, that was released in the album of the same name, on September 11, 2004.[8][9] He used this album to promote himself during the Chilean municipal election of 2004.

Legacy

One street in Pichilemu is named after him. In January 2006, the Pichilemu City Council approved the naming of three streets in Pichilemu as Emilio Merino Lacoste (former mayor of Pichilemu, deceased), Clarisa López (worker for the Pichilemu Hospital and the local Casa de Socorros, deceased), and Jorge Vargas González, who was mayor at the time of the approval.[10]
